WTF is the Metaverse?

WTF is the metaverse? Those were our exact thoughts when we heard the term. Naturally, we had to research and learn everything about it (yes, we have an inner nerd, or at least a desire to learn new things). Let us share a quick recap of what we found.

The metaverse is a term coined in the 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash. It is where the physical and digital worlds come together. Imagine combining the world we live in with the digital world we access through the internet.

You would literally be immersed in a 3D world instead of staring at a computer screen or your iPhone. Social media, shopping, video games. The metaverse will have it all.

Sounds weird right? Well after our research, we not only believe the metaverse will be a large part of our future, we also believe in it enough that we have invested in stocks and start-ups focusing on making the metaverse a reality (pun intended).

There are already some great companies using virtual reality and augmented reality, but we believe that is only the beginning. The metaverse can truly blur the line between reality and virtual and change the world as we know it. According to a research paper from Strategy Analytics, the metaverse could be worth $280 billion by 2025.

To get exposure to the metaverse, we have invested in Facebook, Immersed, and we have another platform on our radar called Decentraland, but we have not yet pulled the trigger.

Facebook

Everyone knows Facebook as the social media platform that also owns Instagram and WhatsApp. But Facebook has been making a huge push into the metaverse world. They acquired Oculus, a major player in the augmented and virtual reality worlds. And more recently, Mark Zuckerberg had this to say:

In the coming years, I expect people will transition from seeing us primarily as a social media company to seeing us as a metaverse company. In many ways the metaverse is the ultimate expression of social technology.

In order to build the metaverse, Facebook has created a division called Reality Labs. They plan to develop software and products that are fully interoperable with other companies online. They are essentially attempting to recreate the Matrix. It sounds wild, but there is a huge demand and we believe Facebook will be the leader.

In fact, just this week Facebook announced they will be changing their name to Meta - as in Meta-verse. And a main focus of the company going forward will be the Metaverse. Here is a clip from the announcement:

Zuckerberg went on to say:

Our role in this journey is to accelerate the development of the fundamental technologies, social platforms and creative tools to bring the metaverse to life, and to weave these technologies through our social media apps. We believe the metaverse can enable better social experiences than anything that exists today, and we will dedicate our energy to helping achieve its potential.

As investors, this is exciting news to us. We can't wait to see what is next for the company.

If you want to invest in Facebook, M1 Finance is a great platform for investing. You can invest directly, buy fractional shares, or even automate your investments using the platform. Click here to get started:

Immersed

Immersed is a start-up that merges working remotely with virtual reality. Remote work is a huge topic right now. COVID showed remote work is a viable option and productivity is unaffected. The legacy companies/employees believe you need to be an office to work, but we disagree strongly. If you get your work done, you should be able to work wherever you want. Why commute for two hours a day and not have anytime to yourself? Sorry, we feel very strongly about it. Back to the point.

Immersed combines remote work and VR. You put on an Oculus headset and you can be in a virtual office working with team members, a coffee shop brainstorming, or anywhere you want. They have partnered with Facebook, Microsoft and HTC. It has potential to change the way we think about work and takes metaverse to the next level.

Decentraland

The last one we have our eyes on, but have yet to invest in, is Decentraland. It is an online world built on the Ethereum network that gives users a place to create an avatar, interact with other users and participate in everything from concerts and art shows to building houses on their digital plots of land. Its truly the definition of the metaverse. The added bonus is that it is decentralized, meaning there is no centralized company controlling the network. We will follow up on this one once we make an investment.

If you want to purchase Decentraland, you can do so on Coinbase. Luckily, we have partnered with them to bring you a great deal for a limited time only.
